Introduction: The drying of Lake Urmia has become a socio-environmental disaster, yet the human dimensions and lived experiences of residents have received limited in-depth qualitative investigation. This study aims to explore the lived experiences of inhabitants of Lake Urmia basin regarding the consequences of the drying and to uncover the hidden meanings in their narratives.
Methodology: This qualitative study employed an interpretive phenomenological approach. Participants included 55 residents and elites (33 residents and 22 local agents/elites) in East and West Azerbaijan provinces, selected through purposive and snowball sampling. Data were collected via in-depth semi-structured interviews, focus groups, and document analysis, and were analyzed using Braun & Clarke’s thematic analysis with |Maxqda software.
Results: Data analysis revealed eight main themes: “silent storm” (environmental disaster), “tearful lands” (economic collapse), “irreversible displacement” (forced migration), “scarred society” (social rupture), “disturbed psyche” (psychological trauma), “agriculture on the brink” (agricultural system crisis), “broken governance” (management inefficiency and distrust), and “wounding solutions” (consequences of inter-basin water transfer). The core theme, “death of lifeworld,” encompasses these eight domains and demonstrates that the crisis has destroyed the semantic and existential world of residents, extending beyond physical aspects.
Conclusion: The drying of Lake Urmia is not merely a technical-engineering crisis but a collapse of the meaning system, identity, and place attachment. Reconstructing the residents’ lifeworld requires multidimensional approaches, genuine participation of local communities, and redefining the human-nature relationship in development policies.
