[English]

Introduction: Numerous studies have investigated the relationship between social media and the salience of national identity among various social groups using different methodological approaches. Accordingly, the present study aimed to apply the meta-analysis method to synthesize and interpret the results of previous studies on the relationship between social media and the salience of national identity in Iran.
Methodology: This research employed a meta-analytic approach. The statistical population consisted of peer-reviewed scientific articles published between 2013 and 2023 that examined the relationship between mass and social media and the salience of national identity in Iran. A total of 38 studies were identified, of which 21 met the inclusion criteria. Data were coded and analyzed using Comprehensive Meta-Analysis (CMA) software. Study heterogeneity was assessed using the Q-test, and publication bias was examined with Egger’s test and a funnel plot.
Results: The overall effect size of the relationship between social media and national identity salience was 0.390, which, according to Cohen’s framework, represents a moderate effect. When gender and geographical region were considered as moderator variables, the combined effect size for men (0.523) was higher than for women (0.436). Among the geographical regions, Sanandaj had the highest negative effect size (-0.508), while Isfahan had the lowest positive effect (0.198) under the random-effects model. Overall, the findings indicate that mass and social media have a significant and moderate impact on national identity salience, influenced by gender differences and sociocultural contexts.
Conclusions: To strengthen national identity within social media environments, it is essential to redefine national identity components comprehensively in light of Iran’s cultural diversity. Restricting media is not an effective strategy; rather, producing diverse, inclusive, and appealing media content can foster a positive and dynamic representation of national identity.
