A Study on Social and Economic determinants of Obesity among Citizens

Abstract

Obesity and its prevalence is an increasing issue in both developed countries and in developing countries due to changes in lifestyle. Studies show that the prevalence of weight disorders in many societies is affected by social, economic and cultural factors. The purpose of this study is to assess the social determinants of obesity. The research was a survey and the statistical population consisted of 20-64 year old women and females and females in Tabriz city, which were selected by using Cochran sampling method and selected on the basis of multi-stage cluster sampling method. The results of this study indicate that the prevalence of obesity among women (72.2) is higher than men (27.8%). variables of Physical activity, type of diet, and social and economic status have an inverse relationship with the rate of obesity and the mass media consumption is directly related to obesity. Also, the results of logistic regression show that the variables of socioeconomic status, physical activity, mass media consumption and type of diet significantly predict the obesity of individuals. Therefore, these variables can explain 56 percent of variance of dependent variable (obesity).
