Social Capital, Hope for the Future and Tendency to Migrating abroad: The Case of Humanities Students at Shiraz University

Abstract

Introduction: This research aimed to investigate the relationship between social capital and hope for the future and the degree of students' tendency to immigration,.
Methodology: Using a quantitative approach and survey method, the statistical population of this study was students of the faculties of humanities at Shiraz University. Using Chocran’s formula, 360 cases, were determined as sample size, which were selected using a probability cluster sampling method. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire. Nahapit and Ghoshal's (1998) questionnaire was used to measure social capital and a researcher-made questionnaire was used to measure other variables. Face validity and Cronbach's alpha coefficient were used to assess the validity and reliability of the research tool, respectively.
Results: The results showed that the variables of social capital and hope for the future have an inverse and significant relationship with the level of tendency to migrate (p< 0.01). There was also no significant difference between the level of students' tendency to migrate according to their social status, gender, and educational level. The dependent variable had a significant difference only in terms of the amount of domestic television use and did not have a significant difference with respect to other media. Path analysis indicates the direct and moderating role of social capital in reducing the tendency to migrate. Multiple regression showed that the independent variables were able to explain 14.7 percent of the variances in the dependent variable.
Conclusion: Social capital plays an important role in the level of tendency to migrate abroad, both directly and by moderating other variables. It is necessary to pay attention to the important role of social capital and its elements in social and economic policy-making.
