Abstract

In Iranian society, energy consumption and waste have become vital problems. Based on available sources, household energy consumption is higher than the global average. This research emphasizes the energy culture of household consumers in the Tehran metropolis. The difference between the present research and other research is that it has examined the daily energy consumption and the behavior of purchasing equipment and building materials related to energy. The approach of this research is qualitative and with a grounded theory strategy. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with residents of residential units until the researchers reached theoretical saturation. Based on this, open, axial coding was done, and the core category was extracted from it. Based on the relevant codes, the findings were divided into three parts: cognitive norms, material culture, and procedures, along with their barriers and facilitators. The findings of the research show that the cognitive norms of most activists are relatively appropriate in daily energy consumption, but in the field of choosing equipment and residential units, they are very low. On the other hand, people with lower incomes have more control over their daily energy consumption with economic motivation. But they use equipment and devices with a lower standard. High-income activists have less control over daily energy consumption, but use equipment with a higher standard. Landlords and tenants also differ in material culture. Owners operate residential units with a long-term view, but tenants have a short-term view. On the other hand, tenants with the motivation of consumption costs perform better in energy consumption procedures.
